The 2008 BMW 328i RWD Coupe

For those seeking the “ultimate driving machine”, your quest is complete; I give you the 2008 BMW 3 Series. In the past decade, the BMW 3 Series has been the benchmark against which all other entry-level luxury cars have been designed. To date, few have accomplished this feat; and it can be expected that the Bavarian classic will once more emerge with its crown. The 2008 BMW 3 Series carries over mostly unchanged and despite fierce competition, remaining the standard for entry-level luxury cars.

The 3 Series offers something for everyone. There are four body styles, two engines, two transmissions and a choice of rear- or all-wheel drive. Also, various luxury and performance-oriented options allow you to equip the 3 as lavishly and/or as sporty as you desire. However you choose to configure the 3, this BMW lives up to its "ultimate driving machine" tag line with an unparalleled fusion of driving ease and ability. Despite its added weight and loss of structural rigidity, even the convertible has found a way to retain much of the 3's handling ancestry.

Consistent with past models, the 328i offers a remarkable mix of handling, ride quality, performance, luxury and styling. Not to mention, it's even fuel efficient. Despite its potent power plants, the 3 Series remains fuel efficient. The 328 gets about 17-18 mpg in the city and 25-28 mpg on the highway, depending on the body style, transmission and drivetrain. For an entry-level luxury car, this is the top choice.

The 2008 BMW 328i and 328xi are powered by a 3.0-liter inline-6 rated at 230 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque. The 335i and 335xi are powered by a heavily modified, twin-turbocharged version of the same 3.0-liter engine that produces an striking 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual is the standard gearbox and a six-speed automatic is optional. In performance testing, the turbocharged 3 Series sedan and coupe raced up to 60 mph in fewer than 5 seconds -- about the same as the last M3. The heavier 335xi and convertible 335i are a hair slower. Expect the 328i to be in the mid-6-second range, which is no tortoise.

There's no wrong way, only your way with either of the engines available in the 2008 BMW 3 Series. The standard, normally aspirated engine is a bit light on low-end torque, but moves the car around smartly and it provides slightly enhanced mileage. In addition, the twin-turbo engine provides the kind of acceleration formerly associated with the high-performance M3.

No matter which model you choose, the 3 Series' world-class suspension, steering and brakes will consume days at a time filled with entertainment embarking upon twisty two-lane highways. On top of the reassurance of feeling rock-solid when aggressively cornering, this car communicates with the driver like a crew-chief at Daytona. Not to undermine the 3 Series as an ideal long-distance cruiser, capable of delivering both a comfortably controlled ride and a quiet cabin environment.

As the benchmark for luxury vehicles, the 328i starts at a very reasonable $22,439.

Defining Road Performance: Meet the Audi S Line

For those who value performance above all else, allow us to introduce Audi’s S line of automobiles.  Engineered specifically for the enthusiast market, the S models enjoy performance enhancing upgrades all around and definitive styling cues, making them stand out as the ultimate versions of their respective models.

Let’s start with the S4.  Replacing the standard powerplant in the Audi A4 is a supercharged 3.0L V6.  Good for 330hp, the S4 will hit 60MPH from a standstill in a blistering 4.9 seconds.  Despite its rocket sled acceleration, the S4 will still return 28MPG on the highway (S tronic transmission).  Its standard all wheel drive system and specifically tuned suspension give confidence like no other.  In fact, in October 2009, Car and Driver put the S4 and BMW 3 series – widely regarded as the standard in sports sedans - head to head in a comparison test.  The S4 bested the 3 series.  Enough said.

Also available is the TTS coupe and roadster for those who prefer smaller, more intimate sports cars.  Propelled by a more powerful version of the 2.0L turbo engine, the TTS comes standard with 265hp, good for a 0-60 time of 4.9 seconds.  The suspension system consists of a special fluid controlled by an electromagnetic field.  The TTS constantly monitors driving conditions to deliver the appropriate level of stiffness for maximum handling feel.  That, coupled ith a curb weight of just over 3200 pounds and Audi’s all wheel drive system, the TTS provides a sprightly, tossable feel that will instill confidence when you’re tearing down your favorite road.

For unparalleled utility, performance, and luxury, try the S6 sedan.  Powered by a screaming V10 powerplant, the S6 comes with a road scorching 435hp.  As with all S models, all wheel drive is standard for uncompromised handling in any weather condition.  Model specific rims and bodywork warn other drivers that you’re driving an S.  Inside you are treated to buttery smooth Milano leather, and available carbon fiber accents serve to remind you of the the S6’s racing heritage.  Best of all, you will find the S6 to be a standout value compared to its competitors.  While you might normally expect to pay upwards of $100,000 for the privilege of driving a top-level sports sedan, the starting price of the S6 rings in at $76,100.

Finally don’t miss the drop dead gorgeous Audi S5 sports coupe.  Featuring a 4.2L V8 engine, the S5 delivers a stout 354hp.  Featuring head-turning timeless styling, the S5 brings a level of distinction and luxury that is unsurpassed.  Yet the S badge reminds passerby’s that the S5 is a serious sports machine, ready to bring a new level of excitement to your daily commute.

Audi’s S line – uncompromised performance and style for the discerning driver.

As impressive as this sounds, the real test is by you on the road.  We invite you to come by Audi North Scottsdale or Penske Auto Mall for your own personal examination, and see for yourself what an outstanding value the S line is.
