Marking a return to BMW’s roots, the 2011 BMW 1 Series was created for bold drivers who value a little sass with their class. The 1 delivers a small lightweight chassis and invigorating performance. The 1 series is delivered in either a two-door coupe or convertible with your preference of a naturally aspirated 3.0-liter I6 with 230 hp or optional twin-turbo 3.0-liter I6 good for 300 hp.
Spend an afternoon with the 1 Series and you’ll discover it has an undeniable, mischievous character that reminds us of the joy of the open road. Despite being the entry-level BMW, the 1 Series is available with the same inline-6 gasoline engines as the BMW 3 Series.
A 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic with paddle-shift control ensure up to 19/28 mpg city/hwy with rear-wheel drive. Available features include NAV, upgraded audio, iPod/iPhone connectivity, leather seats, a heated steering wheel and many more comfort, technology and performance options. Safety highlights include front and side airbags, ABS and Dynamic Stability Control. The 1 series is a mini missile and reminds us of the engineering, performance and luxury that made BMWs of the past so admired.
The rear-wheel-drive BMW 1 Series offers a choice of two different 3.0-liter inline-6 engines. The 128i produces 230 hp and 200 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard and a six-speed automatic transmission is optional. In performance testing, a manual-equipped 128i coupe sprinted from zero to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds. The convertible posted a 6.7-second time. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 18 mpg city/28 mpg highway and 22 mpg combined regardless of transmission.
The 2011 BMW 1 Series comes in coupe and convertible body styles, both of which are available in 128i and 135i configurations. The 128i comes standard with 17-inch cast-aluminum wheels, automatic headlights, automatic wipers, heated mirrors and windshield washer jets, cruise control, eight-way manual front seats, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, premium vinyl upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control and a 10-speaker stereo with a CD player, HD radio and an auxiliary audio jack and a few other goodies. The 128i convertible adds a fully lined power-folding automatic soft top and a special convertible mode for the climate control.
Given the 1 Series’ powerful engines and sports car-style handling, it’s hard to beat an asking price of $32, 250.
