The 2011 BMW 550i

The accolade for the mightiest punch goes to the 550i; this year it is equipped with the same 400 hp 4.4 liter turbo V8 as the 7 Series. The added power will undoubtedly be put to use as the 2011 550i is roughly 300 pounds heavier than last year's model. A portion of the weight gain can be attributed to the car's increased size, in both length and width. Mechanically, it shares many similarities with the 7 Series and features the 7s new multilink front suspension and a new electric assist steering rack. The greatly new and improved iDrive system highlight the changes, accompanied by an automated parallel parking system, a head-up display, top-view and sideview cameras and a blind-spot monitoring system. 

The 550i adds leather upholstery, upgraded front seats, parking sensors, auto-dimming mirrors, interior ambience lighting and a hard drive based navigation system with voice controls and real-time traffic.

If I were to describe the latest 5 in one word: Brilliant. Sportier than Mercedes’ E-Class, cleaner appearing interior than the Audi A6 and more spacious than the Jaguar XF, the 2011 BMW 5 Series continues to win the hearts and minds of drivers worldwide. 

The 2011 BMW 5 Series sedan comes in three different engines that correspond to three trim levels: 528i, 535i and 550i. The 535i and 550i are also offered as "xDrive" all-wheel-drive variants. 

The latest 550i accelerates as quickly as a V8 sport coupe without the connotation of pompous swagger.

The new eight-speed automatic works extraordinarily well with any engine choice, even when performing multi-gear downshifts. The 550i and a turbo-charged kick start at just $72,850.
