How It Works

Improved Combustion

One improvement is the implementation of a single central fuel rail to feed the cylinders rather than individual mechanical fuel injectors for each cylinder. Mercedes-Benz diesel engines also use piezo injectors which are ceramic injectors that can separate each injection into as many as five separate injection events to create a more controlled, quieter combustion process.

Fuel Efficiency

Even with such incredible speed, torque, and handling, Mercedes-Benz BlueTEC engines boast even more unbelievable fuel-efficiency. These vehicles get 20 to 30 percent better fuel efficiency than similar cars that run on gas. Models like the E320 boast impressive mileage averages including 23 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. Most BlueTEC vehicles can travel 600 miles or more on just one tank of gas. That is enough fuel to drive from Chandler, Arizona to Tucson, Arizona over six times!
